At Hall High School, there are an abundant amount of clubs that vary in focus. Whether the goal  is to feed the hungry, or exemplify various cultures to the school, our high school has a club for it.

Empty Bowls:

Empty bowls is a Hall High School club that focuses on feeding the hungry. This year the co-president is senior Noah Sobel-Pressman. As a junior, Noah was the club’s vice president.  He said that, “Empty bowls was started to help fight hunger in Greater Hartford and abroad. The name comes from the classic image of a kid having an empty bowl, so we are trying to fill the bowl.”

This April, (final date to be determined) the club will be participating in their annual community dinner. Sobel-Pressman says, “Last year we partnered with feeding children everywhere to make over 20,000 meals.” Ronni Newton from the West Hartford Patch stated, “The bowls are beautiful, practical, and symbolic – handcrafted by students in the art department at Hall High School, and intended to remind people that even though they may be able to refill their own bowls, others are not so lucky.”

Empty Bowls is eager to have as many members as possible. Co-president Sobel-Pressman thinks people should join this club because hunger is a very prevalent issue in today’s society.

Cultural Fusion:

Cultural Fusion is a diverse “talent show” that expresses different students’ backgrounds. It is annually put on by the Hall High community. Thiago Bastos is the student director of the show. He said, “the purpose of Cultural Fusion is to promote the different ethnicities and cultures in our school, as well as showcasing the students talents through music, poems, and even dances.”

“The event started as a celebration of Black History Month and is getting drastically bigger each year”, John Garcia from the West Hartford News wrote. Bastos thinks anyone who has a cultural dance, poem, or song should become part of the show. Bastos said, “This show is meant to give the minorities a time to shine and express themselves and their performances.” It is evident that this event has really brought together all types of people. Many friendships have been made through the cast of the show.

Human Rights Coalition:

Human Rights Coalition is a club at Hall High School that is goal-oriented on bringing awareness of different human rights issues to the West Hartford community. Audrey Fromson, the co-leader of the club said, “We have worked to raise awareness of mental illness through ‘Strum out the Stigma’, a concert that raised funds for an organization that works to reduce the stigma that accompanies mental illness.”

The club has also recently advocated for women’s rights organizations and has been working on a fundraiser to support the Malala Fund, which helps women across the globe get access to proper education. Fromson has been a member of this club since her freshmen year of high school. Being aware of the surrounding issues that affect people both within and without of West Hartford is the club’s focus.

A few of the clubs at Hall High School are doing projects that a lot of students are completely unaware of. Keeping up with the goals these clubs are trying to accomplish and possibly even helping these clubs can be a great way to get involved in the community, not only here at Hall High School but in West Hartford in general.
