Which Way is the Right Way

Some people say high school comprises the best years of your life, while others say the years of college are unbeatable. What about those who are in between, taking what is known as a gap year? Many students, like myself, have chosen life after graduation is a perfect time for college, but, I could, I would take a gap year and go on an adventure and leave school behind.  There are risk takers out there; the thrill seekers are those who are tired of getting up at seven  just to fall asleep during class. For them, a gap year is needed to refresh the brain and possibly find something they’re interested in.

In the summer of 2012, Leobardo Espinoza Jr. had the opportunity to take a gap year to engulf himself in different cultures and to learn more on his own.  “I mean, who doesn’t like travel? Espinoza was concerned that if he did miss a year of college, he would then be behind his friends and it would seem like a waste of time. Like many parents, Espinoza’s, too, were worried that if he took a gap year, college would seem like a thing of the past. This isn’t wrongful thinking, but this generation doesn’t want to be stuck behind a desk for the rest of their lives. For me however, traveling is more than just experiencing other cultures, it’s also about learning about my own,” said Leobardo in the New York Times. His friends told him to do what he wants, not what others think he should do. What about finding love instead of a sports team?

Later in the article, it talks about how Julieann, who was a senior in high school didn’t feel like college was her next step. “There was a lot of pressure to immediately know what you were going to do with your life,” she went on to say. Not knowing the next step is what many seniors in high-school and even college think about. Other people shared their experience of a gap year and how it helped them find love. When Josh and Kristina got engaged, they dropped everything, including their jobs for gap year of their own. “But we got through a point where we just clicked, and from that point through today I think our relationship is stronger,” said John from the article their in  on CNN. This goes to show you that a year off without any stress can be stressful in itself but it pays off in the long run.

At the end of the day, it’s your choice whether you want to be adventurous or get a college education and you might regret it.
