Brooke Birbara, a senior at Hall High School, chose to take journalism to have more liberty in her writing. She hopes to write about women in STEM and medicine.

Q: Who has been your biggest role model?

My biggest role model has been Dr. Christine Finck. She is a pediatric surgeon at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. This summer she let me shadow her and watch some of the surgeries she was performing. She’s just so smart, powerful, and an incredible surgeon. I’d love to be like her one day.

Q: What are your plans for after high school?

I plan to go to college. I’d like to be a doctor and eventually go to medical school. I think I’ll major in biology.

Q: Why did you decide to take Journalism?

I really think that journalism matters. I am an avid consumer of news, and I wanted to take a writing class that would let me choose what I write about.

Q: What are some of your greatest accomplishments so far? And what are some that you would like to achieve?

I am most proud of the research that I was able to do. I was an intern in a Glial Pathology Lab and I was able to research Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. It was such an honor knowing that the research I was doing could help people. I want to be able to continue researching through college.
