Recently, soap brand Dove released 15 body wash bottles shaped in a curvaceous manner to help women celebrate their bodies. Dove got positive and negative feedback from their consumers. Bottles are tall, short, curvy and round – all shapes that resemble the female body. Dove says these bottles show diversity.

Many young girls struggle with body image issues in adolescents. Several students here at Hall, had something to say about this issue. After showing the commercial, Ann Lawton from attendance said, “ It [media] could impact teens and how they view themselves making them more self aware, but not in a positive way.”

Jillian Croll wrote in, Guidelines for Adolescent Nutrition Services, from University of Minnesota says, “50-88% of adolescent girls feel negatively about their body shape or size.” Social media being more prominent in everyday lives than before definitely can influence teens and their bodies making them think they need meet certain standards to be beautiful.

Body image issues used to be seen affecting more high school adolescents than younger kids. Sarah McGuinness, a senior at Hall adds, “Now it’s affecting the younger generation now, maybe even more. Media is targeting younger people now.”

The media heavily influences more girls than boys. We hear more cases of depression and eating disorders with girls than with boys.  Matt Graulich, a Junior at Hall says, “There’s a weird amount of pressure to look a certain way for girls.”

There are a lot of famous women who are bigger and are proud of themselves like Rebal Wilson, Alisa McCarthy just to name a few. This is important for young girls to see because it shows confidence and success no matter how one looks. Ann Lawton’s advice for teens going through body image issues is this, “I think you should believe in yourself and be proud of who you are.” Sarah McGuinness adds, “Stop thinking of your body as something that needs to be fixed.”
