Hall High’s New Years Resolutions

Everyone knows that at the beginning of each year, most of society tries to hit the gym and be productive with new mindsets and goals carrying them through the day. Everyone also knows that for most people, this doesn’t last more than a week.

In 2017, it seems that people have finally realized that randomly starting a habit at the beginning of the year isn’t going to work. According to Ms White (Hall High’s favorite psychology teacher): “It takes 60 days to start a habit, and if that particular habit produces anxiety it is not going to work for you.” As a psychology major, she stresses that people should set realistic and achievable goals that does not undermine their confidence.

Next Mrs. Landers, guidance counselor, who immediately told me that she has no resolutions! She said that she tries to set goals for herself every year, but you need to be prepared to fully commit to the goal you are setting for yourself.

Some of our student body had similar responses.

Gabrielle Little (‘17) and Miriam Holsbeke (‘17) both claimed that they wanted to live more in the present and focus more on living their lives, instead of completely worrying about the stressful parts of their lives. Like their senior counterparts, most of the students asked about their resolutions focused more on self awareness and self love than the usual materialistic and physical goals people have.

What about the bikini bods? Are people no longer watching all their calories? Does that mean people are slowly learning to be happy with themselves? I certainly hope so.

Forbes Magazine has 5 special New Year’s Resolutions that are similar to those at Hall High.

  1. Practice self-compassion
  2. Become more aware of your feelings
  3. Spend at least 15 minutes a day in quiet reflection
  4. Establish weekly goals for yourself
  5. Identify three things you are grateful for every day

Looks like bikini bods and working out have finally taken 2nd place for loving yourself, and whether you think that is good or bad, you should definitely be loving yourself.
