Many Americans throw compostable substances away with the rest of the trash. In fact, according to the University of Indiana, 28% of landfill waste is compostable. This compostable trash takes up valuable space in landfills and increases methane emissions. Composting substances would have an enormous environmental impact. A University of Indiana study determined that if everyone in the US composted, it would remove emissions equivalent to that emitted by 7.8 million cars. Composting requires minimal effort; place compostable substances in a can and let them decompose. Once the substance is decomposed, spread it near plants and cover it with soil. The University of Indiana states that this soil with compost can hold 2.5 times more water than traditional soil, reducing water consumption.
