The word injury, an aspect of physical pain, ranging from skimming your knee to breaking your arm. Athletics is a common setting where injuries occur, yet we pay no recognition to the emotional pain and mental health of our athletes following injuries.
Emotional distress appears in countless stages of the process of an athlete’s injury. Whether that is waiting to see a doctor, shown by injured athlete Jack O’Neil waiting outside the training room, or finally entering the training room and learning new exercises, shown by Anthony McKeown interacting with the trainer. The worst distress of all, is looking out onto the field following a loss, knowing you could have changed the outcome, yet an injury prohibits that, shown in the third image, by injured athlete Patrick Liddell. High school athletes not only experience physical pain from injuries, but also emotional pain, which is debatably more detrimental.
