Seniors of Hall High School are bombarded with schoolwork during the extremely stressful college application process. The burden of extra tasks on top of applications has taken a toll on students.
Senior year is a crucial time for students who plan on applying to college and the struggle of keeping your grades up at the same time alleviates that stress even more when applying to college. The days leading into December and January are filled with an overwhelming focus of essays, supplementals, deadlines that most of us are unaware of, and the worry of actually getting accepted. Despite this period of time; carrying the biggest workload, teachers continue to assign substantial amounts of homework and large assignments. How can applications be to perfection if we have to worry about the other work we have?
Kelly Ann Fransen of Hall High says that “I still think it’s important because you’re going to have homework in college, the majority of your work in college is gonna be homework”. When we actually are in college, we won’t be worrying about applying to schools while balancing other tasks. Mrs. Fransen also keeps in mind that her students who are seniors are busy, working, and have responsibilities. She also mentions that this workload takes away from being in clubs if you are swamped. On the other hand a math teacher, Thomas Ledvorowski says, “absolutely not” to less work for seniors and that his 2 assignments per week and 3 tests a quarter is the right amount. Unlike Mr. Ledvorowski, some teachers choose to assign multiple assignments per week and tests on top of that. Sometimes, students will also have to write papers and finish projects on a strict deadline.
As stress is a natural part of the college admissions process, students feel that the homework load is adding up. Gabby Deslauriers, a student at Hall High School says she spends 2-3 hours on homework daily and 15 hours every week. “I think it is one of the most stressful things because during the week we never have time to do any actual homework”. She mentions how on the weekends that she needs to finish college applications, there is still more homework to do.
The process of college applications has really put a burden on students and caused them to fall behind in their school work. Teachers continue to assign work and disregard the stress students intake. College applications have proceeded to advance and become more extensive over the years and if teachers don’t alter their workload, the issue could progress.
