If someone were to give you thousands of dollars to get you to commit to their school knowing that money bribes were illegal in college athletics, would you accept it?

In May 2017, it came out that many NCAA Division I schools have been giving incentives to families of athletes using thousands of dollars, so that their child plays for the specific school.

Generally, student athletes go to schools that are sponsored by brands they like, such as Nike or Adidas, but those who can also provide them and their families with the most aid; From gear, to tuition, books, meals and more. School’s will cover as much as they can to have the best of the best on their team.

According to CBS Sports, teams such as Louisville, USC, South Carolina, Arizona, and Alabama, are giving thousands upon thousands of extra dollars to families as an incentive. According to the FBI, Louisville gave one family $150,000 alone, and another $100,000. Auburn gave $141,500 to a particular family as well.

Since May, college basketball has been under the eye of the FBI for this misdemeanor. This investigation of criminal influence of money on students has been going on for quite sometime, even before it became a trending topic earlier this year. These bribes are usually in exchange for commitment to the Division I college or up until the player enters the NBA.

Each of the [four] coaches is charged with bribery conspiracy, solicitation of bribes, honest services fraud conspiracy, honest service fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and Travel Act conspiracy. The U.S. Department of Justice said each of the coaches faces a maximum sentence of 80 years in prison.” from the ESPN story on the FBI’s NCAA Investigation.
