National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is a month full of hope. As the school year picks up speed and the workload becomes nearly unbearable, there is no shortage of things to hope for. Hoping for a good grade on a test and hoping to go to bed before midnight. Hoping the football team will win Friday’s game and hoping that Halloween will come faster. Hoping for sweater weather and hoping to find the best dress for homecoming. But for some people, there are bigger things to hope for. That’s because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the National Cancer Society, “a woman living in the US has a 1-in-8 lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer”. Women now have an even higher chance than they did back in the 1970’s, when the lifetime risk was 1-in-11. In this day and age where it seems as if everything you do can cause cancer, it is more important than ever to keep yourself informed.

To combat the growing statistics, Hall’s Relay for Life club is constantly raising money for the American Cancer Society. This month, each sports team will have at least one game inspired by Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Athletes will don pink uniforms or accessories, and there will be a table full of goodies to buy – of which proceeds will go straight to Relay for Life’s fundraising.

So next time you’re out supporting one of our amazing sports teams, look out for a pinked out table and treat yourself to something nice. Even if the calories aren’t great for you, buying that cupcake could save lives, so you may as well double fist it and dig in.
