Do you think it is fair to tell a girl of color cannot wear a headwrap? I don’t think it’s fair, there are plenty of different things girls wear them for. A few years ago a former student, my aunt named Attalah Charles was in a classroom and her teacher asked her to remove her beanie and she said “No because I am having a bad hair day.” She was sent to the office and had a meeting. Ever since that meeting they made it a rule that headscarves or any type of head attire is not allowed in school. Attalah Said… “I think that was a racial thing because a girl that wasn’t colored had on a headwrap, but the former teacher stated that she had a reason to have it on and I also said so had a reason also.”Do you think that situation is okay?
Me being a girl of color at Hall High School, I personally don’t feel comfortable to wear a headwrap in school because people are so quick to judge. I get labeled as ghetto, ratchet and crazy. People always assume that since I wear headwraps I am going to fight someone or baldheaded. Those types of words are very stereotypical towards girls of color. My grandmother, Attalah said, “As a black women we face a lot of heat over our looks from our hair and skin color to our body shape.” I think our parents need to take apart of this being an issue because a lot of girls can’t handle the situation. Deja Iverson said, “My freshman year of high school I got in trouble for wearing a bonnet and refusing to take it off and sit in ISS. I only refused to sit in ISS because I felt that I didn’t do anything wrong nor was it bothering anyone.”
You must always stick up for what you believe in no matter what. Do you think guys are bother by them? Kamrim Mckain said, “ Me being a guy, I don’t think that when girls of color wear the headwraps it is a distraction.They are not ugly with them on. I don’t think they are “ghetto” when wearing it either.” Even some guys think that there isn’t a problem with them and is a distraction to them learning. Everyone should be treated fairly girls and guys shouldn’t have a rule to something they wear on their head being religious or not.
Wearing a head wrap and a hat is two different things. Hats are out of respect to be removed when doing things respectful or not suppose to be on the table. With a head wrap you should not have to remove it because you never know someone’s situation. I don’t think it is fair that girls that are not religious that are not allowed to wear headscarves everyone should be allowed. We need to stick up for what we want and what we believe in, because it is not fair and it has become an issue over time. The School systems are messed up. You should be able to wear whatever you want to.
