Gen X and the Natural World

Gen X, often deemed “iGen” is regularly presented as a group of narcissistic, technology obsessed teenagers. We are seen as incapable of interaction outside of the internet, and unwilling to explore the outside world. Visit any online periodical, local newspaper, or monthly magazine, and you are almost guaranteed to find an article depicting the issues with today’s youth.

I want to challenge that distorted narrative, and pose one of my own. Today’s youth are not the unanimated, zombie-like children that popular culture says we are, rather we are ever-spirited, provocative explorers looking to challenge and question the world around us. We are not basement dwellers choosing to stay in the darkness of our homes playing Fortnite. In fact, we cherish the outdoors and look to explore the natural world.

My pictures depict the true nature of teenagers today. The subjects can be seen admiring the sun setting over Cape Cod Bay at a small private beach in Eastham Massachusetts, and bathing in a golden ray of sun streaming through the trees in a Connecticut freshwater creek. The final picture depicts two teens napping in a hammock at the top of a mountain overlooking Connecticut forestry. These photos capture the spirit of our generation, and our willingness to challenge the narratives society has set for us.

While some may disagree with my sentiments, I challenge them to look up from their computers, iphones, and laptops to go outside and observe what you see. Yes, there may be a cluster of high-school sophomores with their heads pointed down and their phones in their palms. And yes, there may be eighth graders chattering about Ninja’s latest Fortnite Victory Royale; however, I guarantee the viewer will see something else. There will be teenagers hiking nearby trails or jogging around town in cross country uniforms. There will be teens playing Frisbee in local parks and throwing a football on turf fields.“Kids these days” are not just technology-corrupted youth. We are vibrant and dynamic global citizens who appreciate the world we live in.
