A Life Lost But Not Forgotten

The morning of Tuesday October 2, 2018, left the world baffled when the news of the murder of renowned journalists Jamal Khashoggi. One reader said, “When the news broke my heart sank,” said on reader. On the day of  his death, Khashoggi was to go to the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul.

He intended to finalized his divorce to his first wife, in order to marry his fiance Hatice Cengiz. Mr. Khashoggi had already gone to the consulate on September 28 2018, due to the same task and was told to come back in October. Cengiz later commented, “He did not believe something bad could happen on Turkish soil,”.  

Prior to becoming a well known critic of the Saudi Arabian government Khashoggi was an advisor to the government. Khashoggi is responsible for reporting the expansion of Osama Bin Laden’s influence.

Turkish officials confirmed that, an hour before the arrival of Khashoggi, cameras showed a van of known Saudi officials and close friends of the Crown Prince arriving. It is reported that the men left the consulate just under two hours after Khashoggi entered it.

Jamal Khashoggi was never seen alive again, his family and friends were left in despair and confusion. Following his death Saudi Arabia denied any involvement in Khashoggi’s death. The United States initially did not take any action towards Saudi Arabia for what happened. Now it is reported that the United States has decided to impose sanctions on Saudi Arabia.

Since the days following his death Saudi Arabia has detained many of the people involved but has yet to pursue further action. This tragedy has caused commotion between journalists and readers. When will lives become more important than politics? When we address the importance of each and everyone’s rights, we will finally able to put human life before partisanship.
