New Haven Mass Overdose
Drip, Drop, OOF! Another body falls in the middle of the New Haven Green; a nice lawn in the middle of a bustling city in Connecticut. Over the course of a couple days in mid-August, more than 100 people were knocked down from a contaminated batch of K2.
K2 is a Synthetic Cannabinoid: a mind-altering chemicals that are sprayed on dried shredded plant material so they could be smoked, or sold as liquids to be vaporized and inhaled in e-cigarettes and other devices.
Cannabinoids got it’s name by being similar to chemicals found in marijuana plants.
The K2 encountered ar New Haven was laced with Fubinaca, a more potent cannabinoid.
Normally, one or two people might need emergency medical care because of drug use. However , at the peak of overdoses on Wednesday the 15th, 46 ambulances responded to the calls. Even when the “Fallout” rates slowed on the next day, in one 15-minute period, police and health workers darted around the park to respond to three distressed individuals. Which meant even during the “slow times” a days worth of overdosed got squeezed into a 15 minute period.
Teams of health workers were frustrated by how they didn’t have the right medication for the overdoses. People who took the K2 either had seizures, went into cardiac arrest, vomited or passed out. Luckily, no deaths were reported and officials said most people recovered quickly.
Chris Murphy a Connecticut senator stated: “After the TV cameras leave, we are still here. It’s not just New Haven.”
Bill Costello, the clinical director for homeless at Cornell Scott-Hill health center, stated: “This is a much bigger problem and much bigger threat to national security than other things.”
I believe these influential people are trying to say; the drug epidemic isn’t a problem on your mind until some random stranger gives you, a friend, a neighbor, or family a small colorful package, causing an overdose.
