The Pros and Cons of Netflix

The Pros and Cons of Netflix

The popularity of Netflix has grown exponentially, especially in the United States. Reflective of the avid movie and TV show streamers we all are, the United States ranks the highest in percentage of users in one country with a whopping 64.5%.   Is Netflix worth the hype? Let’s dissect the pros and cons to this streaming epidemic.

On the positive side, there are no advertisements! There is nothing more irritating than being immersed in a show and, suddenly, there is a cut to a commercial break. The no advertisement feature sets Netflix apart from Hulu, too.

Speaking of Hulu, junior Sari Eisen says, “Netflix is obviously superior to Hulu. People who have Hulu are like people who have Androids. No one likes them.”

An additional perk of Netflix is that users can download shows and movies prior to a flight or entering a no WiFi zone. This feature allows members to be able to stream Netflix without internet connection. So, the next time you go on a car ride, be sure to hit the download button to prevent using up all of your precious data!

Additionally, Netflix is constantly coming out with original series and movies. Think about it – without Netflix Originals, the infamous Kissing Booth would have never destroyed our little minds.

Arguably, the biggest con of Netflix is that it is too good. There have been countless instances where Netflix has been a hindrance to my homework or studies. After surveying 50 Hall students, 96% agree with that statement.

Another downside to Netflix is that it is extremely judgemental. After binging an X amount of shows, it will ask, “Are you still watching?”

Yes, Netflix I am, and before I think harder about the judgemental connotations to that question, please take me to the next episode.

Essentially, the pros outweigh the cons in this debate, and Hulu is still less elite than Netflix. In order to eradicate the cons regarding Netflix, we must hold off on streaming until our work is done, and we (or just I) must build a stronger ego to brush off Netflix’s judgy questions.
