Hillary must be the Next President

Hillary Clinton attended Yale Law School to focus on how she could use the law to help families. Donald Trump received a “small donation” of $1 million from his father. Hillary Clinton’s first job out of school was working as an attorney for the Children’s Defense Fund. Around the same time she was working this job, the Justice Department filed a civil rights law suit against Trump’s company for racial discrimination. Clinton has worked in public service for over 40 years and was First Lady of the United States as well as Secretary of the State. Trump has continually looked out for himself and his own interests rather than for the interest of the American people.

Who seems to be the more qualified candidate, Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump? Clearly, Clinton is more qualified, and as Hall High School 12th Grader Kory Powell points out Clinton, “throughout her adult life has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of US citizens and the children of our country.” Many people agree with Kory. According to a USA Today/Suffolk University poll of 1000 people, taken October 24-October 27, 47% said they would vote for Clinton. Political analyst Larry Sabato believes that these results will hold, and “all signs are pointing to a Hillary Clinton win in November.”

Despite the fact that I want Hillary to win, there is some truth to what Trump says.

He is right when he talks about ObamaCare, or the Affordable Healthcare Act, as being extremely flawed. But, Clinton also acknowledges this, and rather than put the power in the hands of the insurance companies, she is going to make the program cheaper.

Trump is also correct when he supported Planned Parenthood Programs work. Clinton also supports this program. And Trump’s xenophobia is understandable with the number of immigrants, legal and illegal, in our country. Yet, building a wall is the best solution. In general, after many years of working in real estate, Trump seems to have an incorrect notion that the government should be run like a business. He also contradicts himself a lot, and changes his opinions, so it’s often hard to find his stance on issues. Trump may not be that bad of a choice, but Hillary Clinton is clearly the better candidate in my mind for three main reasons.

First, she acknowledges her mistakes. Clinton and Trump have both had missteps along their campaign trails.  From Hillary’s email scandal, to Trump’s denigration of women,  from the way Hillary dealt with Benghazi, to Trump refusing to release his tax returns, both candidates are in hot water.

But, Clinton acknowledges her mistake. During the first debate at Hofstra University she admitted “… a mistake using private email.” Meanwhile, when interrogated by Clinton about his lack of paying taxes, Trump arrogantly smiled and said “that makes me smart.” Is that what we want our next President to be like? Bragging about breaking the law.

The second reason I will support Clinton is because I agree with many of her stances on social and economic issues. She’s right when she says that “…hard-working families need and deserve tax relief and simplification.” There is an unequal distribution of wealth in our country, and having harsher taxes on the wealthy could help balance us.

On Syrian refugees, Clinton believes that we should not be intimidated by terrorists, while Trump doesn’t want to let even peaceful immigrants into our country. And on gun control, Clinton understands that if there are restrictions on our first amendment rights, there needs to be more restrictions on our second amendment right.

The final reason I will support Clinton is because of her track record. She is very qualified to be president, especially because she has been involved in the political atmosphere for quite some time. She was First Lady from 1991-2001, a US senator from 2001-2009, and Secretary of the State from 2009-2013.

There are many people, teenagers especially, who are undecided as to who to vote for. Some of these undecided voters, like Hall High School senior Jake Gilden, who don’t really like either candidate. There are also folks like high school senior Charlie Lage who are “less Pro-Hillary and more Anti-Trump.” No matter what, people can’t sit out this election, nor can someone just vote Anti-Trump because the next President will get to appoint three supreme court justices. Thankfully, with her track record, Hillary Clinton will choose the right people for the job. Vote for Hillary because you know that she will do what’s best for our country.
