Sam Lumelsky, a noted chess player, is making a move towards journalism.
Q1: Where did you grow up?
A: At first, it was me, my mom, and my dad in a little apartment in Farmington. Then we moved to a house when my little brother was born.
Q2: Who is your biggest inspiration?
Probably my dad: Not to throw a Tom Brady answer out there, but it’s my dad. I see him everyday and he’s my role model. I have followed his foot steps in almost everything including chess, sports, both playing and watching, music and more.
Q3: Why do you like Chess?
Chess has run in my family for many generations. I felt obligated to continue the legacy and become a skilled chess player. Additionally, I have always enjoyed playing it. There is so much chess has to offer. It goes beyond just the pieces and the board. It is emotional, competitive, challenging, adaptive. Chess is also something that has brought me closer to friends and the community around me.
Q4: Why did you choose to do Journalism?
I surround myself with sports news and this motivated me to take Journalism to understand the workings behind what a read in the sports world. Many reporters have a tree of connections that they utilize daily in order to get the word out on a certain topic before anyone else. I am curious to know about the amount of effort a journalist is willing to put into an article that goes beyond the words on a page.
Q5: What role has journalism played in your life?
I read a lot of articles on ESPN that are usually focused on NFL or NBA related topics. I am always interested to learn about the different perspectives analysts have on certain teams and I enjoy expanding my knowledge about the world of sports. Other than that I stay current through using social media platforms, such as instagram. I follow several different sports news outlets such as cbssports, bleacherreport, and many more.
