Body Image: A Dangerous Fanaticism

We often become lost in a concept best characterized by its unrealistic expectations, peer pressure, and self-deprecation: negative body image. By trying to rank ourselves using preconceived notions of beauty, often found in the media around us, we create a toxic environment for ourselves. The first photo attempts to capture this by absorbing unviable news and information harmful to our self-confidence. As a result, this often spirals into the hyper-attentiveness of one’s appearance and can build up a significant amount of stress over time, as indicated by the second photo. When that stress goes unchecked, those consequences can be severe and take many forms. Whether that means compensating in the form of medications, creams, or a deprivation of one’s mental health, the effects can all add up very quickly. The final photo taken attempts to convey the consequences of body image obsession stemming from a negative reflection of one’s self.
