Team Selena or Team Hailey?

The feud between Selena Gomez and Hailey Beiber has become public this past month and caused an uproar in social media. After Hailey Bieber allegedly shaded Selena Gomez in a Tik Tok video, fans grew angry and immediately took Selena’s side.

This conflict is especially attractive to social media users as Hailey’s current husband, Justin Bieber, dated Gomez for eight years. Throughout the ups and downs of Selena and Justin’s relationship, a large number of fans became supporters of them as a couple and didn’t want them to date other people. When it was announced that Hailey and Justin were a couple, followers of Gomez began to criticize Hailey, drawing attention to her flaws and ultimately demeaning her.

This speculated dispute began when “Selena posted a video on her Instagram story, showing fans that she accidentally over-laminated her eyebrows” said StyleCaster Magazine. Kylie Jenner later posted on her Instagram story a picture of her on facetime with Hailey Bieber, both zooming in on their eyebrows. Following that, a picture of herself with the caption “this was an accident?????” was posted. Fans instantly thought that Kylie was shading Selena and labeled Kylie and Hailey as “mean girls”.

When asking fans who are following along with the drama their opinion on the matter, it is rare for a response in support to Hailey. Why is this? Did she really do anything wrong? In an interview with Mark Corey, a PE teacher at Hall High School, it was asked what team he was on and why. His response, as follows, is “Team Selena Gomez, that’s an easy one, she’s always been someone I’ve admired as a human being”. Derek Williams, a student at Hall High School, also responded by saying, “…Selena, because I respect her, I feel like Hailey is doing too much and it was really rude of her to cause all of this.” With this being said, respect as a human is being shown as a key concept to the fans’ opinions.

Through the drama, fans became skeptical that Hailey has been complying with Selena in fashion and interview aspects. In one interview When Selena was asked, “What’s the one thing you wish people knew about you?”, she responded with, “My heart”. In an interview with Hailey about Justin Biebers TV show “Seasons”, she was asked “was it odd having cameras around you at all times?” Her response included how people didn’t know the real her, and later responded by saying “I wish people just knew my heart”, repeating almost exactly what Selena had said previously. When interviewing Marley Brown, a student at Hall High School, she stated “Selena, Hailey caused a lot of drama that didn’t need to be caused,  she’s a bandwagon for Justin. And she can’t be her own person because he doesn’t love her for who she actually is. She’s trying to be like Selena.” supplying not only her side, but her opinion on the so called ‘bandwagon’ Hailey is on.

Even though the drama is between Hailey and Selena, social media has not kept quiet about the situation. According to Forbes Magazine, “Fans are recapping the drama, making their own theories about whether the stars have bad blood and tracking how many Instagram followers Hailey has lost over the past few weeks”. They are involving themselves in the drama and becoming almost obsessive with the outcome. Followers of the two superstars have been in a constant feud since the video was posted. They have been fighting in TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter comments going back and forth. Tiktok has been playing a large role in how people have been receiving their news about the feud. The viral #teamselena on TikTok has reached over a staggering 1.8 billion views, with fans making TikToks in support of Selena. Some fans even go as far to send death threats to Hailey. She was quoted in an article from Pinkvilla saying “I’ve experienced some of the saddest, hardest moments I’ve ever experienced in my adult life, and my mind and emotions have been, to put it mildly, fragile.” It’s revealed that the media’s involvement gets to these celebrities, and no matter what side you may be on they both are human too. Hailey and Selena have feelings, lives, and careers that fans should not be involving themselves in; it’s not worth it.
