Hall’s carbon footprint: How do we tackle it?

Are we using too much electricity? Are we not doing enough as a community to tackle climate issues? These are all questions I had, and still have to this day. We are intrigued as to how humans use so much, but give back so little, or to create a system that is unbalanced and unreliable. We should look into much more reliable sources of power, and to create one that can be updated if needed, and will allow out school to be a leading example across the town and state; solar energy.

We are Sean Cook and Alex Gopaul, 2 17 year olds here at Hall High School, and we’re like every other human, we use electricity. But the problem lies with one huge issue; the overuse of electricity. It has really allowed us to be able to question what sort of new ways to create electricity/energy there are, and how we can implement them in our local schools. Electricity has been overused and wasted, and if we want to use it more efficiently, we should look into our own way to generate it in order to be more efficient. We as a school should become independent and install our own solar panels to generate power for the whole school year round! Building these on top of the school would cost money up front, but the implications would be enormous, and would give our school state-wide praise, giving us grants to build them if the school were to secure funding.

We as a school would be proud of our clean energy approach, including not having to worry about town-wide power outages, allowing the school to continue to operate. In the long run it would save a lot of money, and with our own source of energy, we could keep much more of the lights in the hallways on. That’s why I captured a photo of them in the first place, to signify how the school is constantly keeping these lights on, not knowing how much energy and electricity they take up, but with solar you wouldn’t have to be as mindful of your energy usage. These solar panels would be able to fit on top of flat roofs, and could easily be wiped off too.
