The Honduran flag consists of a bicolor with three stripes, being colored blue-white-blue, with five stars in the center, with two stars over one star over two more. This has not always been the case, however, nor was this the intended presentation of the flag. The original color of stripes on the top and bottom was meant to be turquoise (as Flags For Good states, “The 1949 Flag Decree actually describes the flag of Honduras as a Turquoise color.”); however, the National Party of Honduras kept the color as blue as it is the color of their party. In 2005, opposition candidate Manuel Zelaya was elected, but he was deposed in 2009 in a coup d’etat backed by the National Party after proposing a potential replacement of the constitution (opposition leaders allege that this was an attempt to win re-election despite the one-term limit in Honduras; however, he denies this). The National Party won every election after until 2021, when Zelaya’s wife, Xiomara Castro, won the presidency under the political party Liberty and Refoundation, founded in 2013. It was in 2022 that the flag’s colors were modified from blue to the original turquoise. However, in 2025, the National Party again won elections and in 2026, again modified the flag.
